Bestselling author Cara Putman returns with a romantic legal thriller that will challenge the assumptions of truth tellers everywhere.
Savannah Daniels has worked hard to build her law practice, to surround herself with good friends, and to be the loyal aunt her troubled niece can always count on. But since her ex-husband’s betrayal, she has trouble trusting anyone.
Jett Glover’s father committed suicide over a false newspaper report that ruined his reputation. Now a fierce champion of truth, Jett is writing the story of his journalism career—an international sex-trafficking exposé that will bring down a celebrity baseball player and the men closest to him, including Savannah’s ex-husband.
When Jett’s story breaks, tragedy ensues. Then a commercial airline crashes, and one of Savannah’s clients is implicated in the crash. Men connected to the scandal, including her ex, begin to die amid mysterious circumstances, and Savannah’s niece becomes an unwitting target.
Against their better instincts, Jett and Savannah join ranks to sort the facts from fiction. But can Savannah trust the reporter who threw her life into chaos? And can Jett face the possibility that he’s made the biggest mistake of his life?
I loved Cara Putman’s writing. There was so much detail it felt as if I actually knew the characters their interests, feelings, and thoughts. I felt like slowing down while reading just to savor the writing!
I didn’t realize until a scene a few chapters in that Savannah was likely a recurring character in multiple books. There was a brief but clever introduction to a prior character.
Savannah and her husband drifted apart after 9/11. Each handled the shock from the terror attack differently. Savannah coped by ignoring everything else outside of her law school education. Her ex-husband, Dustin, quickly deployed with the Air Force filed for divorce and turned to Savannah’s narcissistic younger sister for comfort before Savannah conceded to the divorce.
I still remember watching the attack on tv at home with my young son. Just staring at the television after the first plane crashed into the tower and feeling shocked when it suddenly dropped straight down instead of toppling over as I expected.
As a result of her ex-husband’s infidelity, a little girl was born. Savannah was shattered by the realization of his betrayal but loved Addy as her niece. She takes her in charge when Addy’s mother is too stoned to be responsible.
Savannah is used to being strong and caring for everyone else. She hasn’t allowed herself time to take care of herself or for romance.
I cheered for Savannah as she began setting boundaries. It’s not easy to do especially with family.
The romance developed slowly but was sweet. There was a really funny scene during the awkward beginning stages of their romance.
I really love how brave and honorable Jett was. He researched his best to find the truth regardless of the outcome. That takes a lot of integrity. I could see why Savannah developed feelings for him. It is easy to trust a man of such moral character. There is a sense of security in their relationship.
As he researches into the sordid story of four men involved in human trafficking and the sex trade in Thailand, Jett finds a multitude of evidence. Yet four distinctive Twitter accounts suggest otherwise. A small doubt begins nagging at him.
When the men under investigation begin dying the situation becomes dangerous. The suspense kept me guessing.
The resolution gave me a wistful feeling. I recalled a similar feeling watching the ending of a sweet family-friendly manga movie Castle in the Sky. There is also hope for Savannah’s future as she works through her inner struggles. I hope to read more about her.
The ending left me with a question. This reminded me of reading an Agatha Christie novel where there also is a small unanswered question but the same glowing enjoyment of the book. The last couple paragraphs of Flight Risk were absolutely perfect. Wish I could go binge on Cara Putnam’s novels right now. I highly recommend reading this one!
I received a free advanced reader copy of this book. All opinions are completely my own.
